COMMISSIONS
I notice a distinct shift in how ideas flow and the speed at which work progresses when collaborating with owners on commission pieces. This is where my commitment and energy shine. Perhaps it has something to do with my start in design, advertising and commercial projects where I worked well under deadlines, budgets and dedication to taking a project to completion because of an exchange of commitment to a client. I welcome parameters and limitations as they often serve as a necessary anchor to reach outward for a creative solution.
When a work is finished and installed, I love hearing from owners as they describe their developing relationship to the work they’ve commissioned.
If you’ve mind to explore a design, a concept, a feeling, an idea, even if it’s not well-defined, I’d like to hear about it. Let’s brainstorm it, sketch it and build your vision into a work that speaks to you each day.
Commission Example: In a work titled, Three Arches, the owner commissioned a monument-size sculpture. A Calder-esque pachyderm consisting of three broad arches and a tusk is what developed. An eighteen inch macquette version was accepted, which would then be scaled up to a thirteen foot height.
The owner helped in the first production stages, getting hands-on experience with a cutting torch – it’s pretty exciting when molten metal starts flying. Upon completion, the sculpture was acid etched and coated with a catalyzed car paint. A custom template was made for the concrete footings and the site was readied for install. With the owner’s participation, the sculpture sections were erected and bolted together. A final coating was applied and then the celebration began.
